It was not overly surprising that first game up, Kingsholm witnessed a turgid and uninspiring first half. Two big packs with two sets of inexperienced backs did not mix well with a whistle happy referee (in the first period, Sean Davey awarded 14 penalties, 2 free kicks and 2 yellow cards). Glaws had the better of the resultant exchange of penalties, going into the break 12-6 to the good.
The second half started with a bang. Jack Adams, on for the unfortunate Balshaw, dummied and stepped his way to the line with his first touch of the ball. For the next 30 minutes it was virtually one-way traffic with one noticeable exception. An excellent, wind assisted, clearance from Michael Stephenson left Glaws defending a lineout 5 metres out. Borthwick stole the throw and his partner Grewcock crashed over for the unconverted score.
Glaws were soon back in their stride. A surge up the right from the quite brilliant Andy Hazell, was quickly recycled left and it fell to two other forwards, Brown and Buxton, to put Olly Morgan away for a score in the corner. The conversion was missed, but at 24-11, it did seem that the game was safe and that the try-scoring bonus might even be a possibility.
B**h had other ideas and did not give up the cause. With 10 minutes to go, Grewcock received a pass out on the left wing and he galloped in for a second try despite Hazell’s best attempts to stop him. A penalty goal five minutes later not only secured a losing bonus point for the visitors, but also made the last few minutes of the game very tense for the home supporters.
Although midway through the second half, 5 points looked a distinct possibility, a win is a win; especially against B**h. There were some whole-hearted performances from the likes of Hazell, Buxton, Brown and Mefin Davies, and in Marco Bortolami we appear to have acquired not only an excellent player, but also an inspirational leader. All in all, a very satisfactory first outing.
