Gloucester 'A' 36 - Saracens 'A' 13

After the debacle against Wasps a few weeks ago, the ‘A’ team got back to winning ways with a try bonus point win against Saracens. The final score may well have been a little flattering because the result hung in the balance for much of the second half. The defence, though, in the face of some determined Sarries’ forays, held firm and Marcel Garvey scored two well finished tries at the death to secure all five points.
The positives? Luke Narraway was everywhere, and scored two tries. The first was an excellent interception where he showed good pace; the second rounded off a good move involving a well executed floated pass from Lamb and an offload from James Merriman. With Forrester still injured and Balding well off the pace, he should get a chance against the Saints. James Merriman and Anthony Allen both had sound games, and Ryan Lamb showed some glimpses of what is to come, although he may need to bulk up and play the percentages a little better before he comes into serious contention.
And so to my regular “Garvey is Innocent” rant, although none of us really know what he has done wrong. The last time he was trusted in a meaningful match was against Irish where he had precious few chances and tackled like a demon. In this game he showed that his defensive game is very solid (his tackle on the Sarries No. 8, Steffon Armitage, was not for the faint-hearted), and that his pace and finishing have lost nothing whilst he has been kicking his heels. I don’t think that I am in the minority by thinking he should be in the starting 15 against the Saints.
